In some cultures, turtle meat is considered a delicacy and remains highly popular in some parts of Asia. Serve turtle meat to your family or at a friend’s BBQ though, and you may get some awkward looks…
But hey, we’re not here to judge.
As a matter of fact, turtle meat is highly nutritious. Compared with other forms of protein, like poultry, beef, or pork, turtle meat has less fat and contains significantly more protein.
Additionally, different species of turtles can be found almost anywhere on Earth, so they’re a viable food option if you find yourself stranded in the wilderness.
A couple of things to beware of first though, before you go all Gordon Ramsay on the next snapper you find:
- Consuming the flesh of some marine turtles can cause poisoning called chelonitoxism, which can be deadly and there is no known antidote.
- Some nations have laws protecting certain species of turtles, so it’s best to read your local laws before catching and consuming turtles…this is unless you find yourself in a life or death situation.
