As we inch ever closer to a mass surveillance society, we get news of a Swedish company’s plan to implant electronic tracking chips in the hands of up to 700 of its employees!
Employees working in the Epicenter building in Stockholm Sweden are being encouraged to have a small, RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) chip implanted in the back of their hand. About the size of a grain of rice, the chip will store personal information that can then be transmitted over short distances to special RFID receivers.
The program is being presented to the workers as an improvement in convenience – allowing them to “use the photocopier, open security doors and even pay for their lunch” with just a wave of their hand.
Here’s the explanation from the developer of the program:
Hannes Sjoblad, the chief disruption officer at the Swedish bio-hacking group BioNyfiken, which implanted the chips into the Epicenter workers, told The Times: ‘We already interact with technology all the time.
‘Today it’s a bit messy – we need pin codes and passwords – wouldn’t it be easy to just touch with your hand?
And, he believes this is just of the start of “chipping”:
‘We want to be able to understand this technology before big corporates and big government come to us and say everyone should get chipped – the tax authority chip, the Google or Facebook chip.’
While technology like this may offer improvements in efficiency and convenience, there’s also the obvious downside to having a body chip broadcasting your personal information out to the world. Certainly, hackers and governments are looking forward to the massive opportunities for mischief that will present themselves when we all get “chipped”!
